Mostly people are familiar with one billing system but Net Metering is another advance way of billing that allows bi-directional billing. Net Metering in Pakistan allows consumer to sold extra electricity to WAPDA that is generated by customers through solar power system. In this mechanism WAPDA has to pay for those units which are transferred by the owner of solar system either it is domestic or commercial. In Pakistan where electricity bills are big problem, Net Metering is very suitable solution.
For example if there is a PV solution installed at a home, office or any other commercial site with Net Metering system and electricity produce by this PV system is more than the consuming unit by the load then these extra units are transferred to WAPDA. In this transfer of units meter will run backward and count negative numbers then these numbers will be adjusted against the WAPDA units that are used by customers.
Net Metering in Pakistan
Net Metering concept is not very common in mostly countries but is implemented in many countries and now in Pakistan as well. In 2015, NEPRA has issued the regulations for Net Metering in Pakistan that allows WAPDA to purchase electricity units produced by customers.
Key steps involved in Net Metering and explain the trend in state are as follows:
- PV System Installation

- Application Formation

At this step an agreement is signed between power generator (customers) and your electricity provider region i-e LESCO, GEPCO or MEPCO that is minimum of three years according the rules. This agreement will be legal that allows you sale electricity to National grid.
- License Generation
The agreement that is sigend between you and MEPCO or LESCO is send to NEPRA for license generation. Where the agreement is verified by competent authority and after that the licwnse is issued to to you to add extra electricity to the grid.
- Net Meter Activation
In the last you become an independent electricity units producing authority. Once you have issued the license, your Net Meter is installed and activated to sale out power supply that is exceed from your load. That make you be able to earn money by producing more and more power units.
